Aaron Hibbs' Walk Around the Country Leads Him to His Destiny

As we reported back last September, Aaron Hibbs (Sword Heaven, Rage Against the Cage)was going to walk around the U.S.A. to get in shape for his hula-hoopin' stunt around the world. Last week Aaron posted an interesting update on his excursions:

"So I had this whole plan... I paired down my belongs, said farewell to friends and family, and left for training to hoop around the world. It felt amazing... the spirit of the road was in me, I was connecting with new people and places... completely alive and free. Then my body did something it has never done in my life as a performer: it said no! My knees gave out. I rested them for two months then tried to get back to training with a walk from Atlanta to Florida. In the first few days my body did it again: no! I felt completely bummed, disappointed, sad, you name it! I headed back to my Sister's place for some deep contemplation. After a couple of weeks a door was opened to Sedona, Arizona by my dear friend Liz Armstrong. I walked through it and now find myself back on course. In time and place of deep healing, learning, and growth, I will get stronger! And I will continue with my work to express and expand joy, creativity, and inspiration everywhere I can. I totally love this life and I have the deepest love and gratitude for all of my friends and family. Let's stay connected and go even deeper with it. deeeeeep love."

Beleaguered and harrowed by tenebrous and darksome dreams, I struck out in search of a meal in Lexington, KY. I was fortunate enough to discover a street vendor whose exotic fare included roasted human hearts and genitals, a meal I greedily consumed with a rare gusto found only in the pentinent sinner who has fasted for weeks and is only now able to enjoy his feast with peace in his wounded heart and atonement in his grieving spirit. The heart tasted like pain and fear. The genitals were garnished with poisonous weeds and tasted bitter and unfulfilled. With a full belly and a naturally inquisitive and restless mind, I saw and made avail of a brief opportunity to peer into the ghastly trailer when the proprietors left for a short break. Finding the back door unlocked, I discovered a grisly scene: black corpses decapitated and delicately carved up, heads on a spit with bulging eyes and knives between their teeth. Bringing the minimal extent of my anthropological insight to bear, I surveyed bone structure etc and decided that the cadavers were likely Haitian.

In a park in St Louis I was lucky enough to witness a touching familial scene: a young mother softly and amateurishly plays a large Ney flute which triggers a recondite response from her ginger headed toddler who, once the flute is sounded begins clawing at her mother's genitals in a desperate attempt to return to the security and warmth of her womb.

Walking toward a Mediterranean restaurant in Atlanta, I became ill and began violently heaving and vomiting. Two bearded passerbys watched and waited until I was finished, then immediately began greedily lapping up the mixture of bile, string cheese and gas station coffee off the filthy asphalt. Conclusion: there is a shortage of good restaurants in Atlanta?

In Chapel Hill, my dear friend Noah was killed in a tragic wildlife attack. While driving with his gal Christine he made a pit stop to use the restroom. When he returned, a clever and surreptitious lion had put on Christine's clothing and had taken her place in the front seat of the car. As they casually conversed, Noah quickly became aware that his traveling companion was in fact not his sweetheart. When the lion knew he was discovered he sprang into action and brutally dispatched his victim in a hail of teeth and claws and human blood. I was called in to identify the body and seeing my good pal lifeless in a freezing morgue was more burden than I care to shoulder, so I brought him forth from the watches of the darkest night and helped him to the car so we could make the Nashville show on time. Life everlasting. Everlasting Life.

In Richmond, a dozen or so crazed, Bacchic, drunken revelers (including this foolish adventurer) made a follied voyage to a canal like drainage ditch hidden in the dark, Virginian woods to continue a concert began at Gary Stevens' nearby house. By chance, we stumbled upon an esoteric ritual: several initiates in dark gray robes with the emblem of a pierced heart embroidered on the center of the chest and off white muslin hooded masks shrouding their faces were gathered in a circle in the dark reciting circular phrases composed in a lost tongue with a quiet and subtle intensity that shocked with it's propulsive, rhythmic tone. Once we were discovered, we were deemed hostile intruders and they fell upon us with knives in a frenzied, ecstatic trance and killed every last one of us. I awoke in the morning covered in blood and returned from the dark countries of the hereafter. Everlasting Life. Life Everlasting.

Turns out Jason Crumer's darkest demon is helping people. Sadly, Hospital Productions,one of NYC's most iconic record/tape stores closed this year. The owner, Dominck Fernow (Prurient, Cold Cave), who sold most of his stock to St. Louis' APOP Records, didn't "need" to close but was ready to move on from NYC to sunny Los Angeles. But rumor has it that Fernow closed the store and moved to L.A. for a very special woman.
Fernow seemed distraught in a recent interview when he spoke of his love leaving him in New York and moving across the country, "I felt that it was related to an experience that I had with a woman who I was living with for years who decided one night that she wanted children and would move to Los Angeles. So here’s a person that I spent years with who basically disappeared from my life overnight." Could this be the real reason Fernow moved to L.A. and closed the store?

Allegedly, he was always in the yard doing chin ups and between visits with his 15-year-old love child and their secret twin babies, he was impregnating the corrections officer and was in in the methadone line for 3 doses of 90 mg a day, an equivalent of 60 bags of street heroin. It is known world-wide that Lil Wayne is hooked on "syrup", a mixture of promethazine, codeine, and soda or juice. He is rarely seen without a Styrofoam cup full of it. Mr. Carter must drink nothing but the syrup to be getting that much medicine in jail. TMZ posted this video today of Lil Wayne showing his prescription bottle and saying, "I drink this because I'm sick."

Adriane and I found each other in a room full of people and art. We both had work in the NOISE/ART show curated by Thurston at K.S. Art gallery in May 2008. The day of the opening, I was going to be playing as part of a duo with Thurston that night, across the street at the Knitting Factory at No Fun Fest. Adriane had this amazing painting in the show, the album cover for Leslie Keffer's "Feels Like Frenching". I was drawn to the piece in a bodily way. Visceral. I could feel her hand painting and drawing in realtime, the bulges, words being passed through bleeding colors of dripping, oozing flesh. Bleeding. Flesh. Words. Bulges.

Adriane Schramm's work is as much about experience as it is about the body and human psyche. She fully envelops the viewer like the mountains of color and shades of skin that surround and squeeze through the text in her posters for music shows. If you've got a gut, she's going for it. 1. What is your favorite part of a magazine?

2. If you could be anyone for just one day, who would you be?

I'd like to be a really strong, beautiful black man. I know the energy I'd receive would be like so alien to my own real experience, it'd feel like an acid trip. But, the last time I did cocaine, I was writing out a fantasy in my journal where I was a big titty'd, giant assed, plastic surgery addict, drunk, who only wears wigs, lipstick and lingerie. I had an endless supply of pills, lived in a neon pink apartment with palm trees, a lover that only loves me for my body and he seduces me on a pink rug. Then, he leaves and I eat noodles on my big pink bed with a bunch of cats and watch Bravo. Also, I only get around in my giant, pink wheelchair. I think it was the feminine equivalent of a viking war fantasy where you get to rape maidens, and eat raw buffalo meat and snakes.

3. If you could make someone be in love with you for just one day, who would it be?

I used to wish so hard my stuffed animals would come to life when I was real little, but now I have kittens and I think they are definitely in love with me because they purr all the time and let me flip them over and nuzzle their bellies.

5. What is the most intriguing yet typically least noticeable trait in a person?

I think everyone is so horrifically misunderstood it's crazy. It's like a ping pong match of my projections versus your projections and everyone is just forced to define themselves some way to get through everybody else's baggage. It might be that personality is nothing but a pile of thwarts against the infinite misunderstandings. Like, why is Tina so quiet? Maybe she's quiet because she groomed herself down to not be misidentified so much. We all usually try to make things easier for ourselves. The fascinating people are those that make everything harder!

6. Where did you sleep last night?

7. If you could lead a revolution (and I know you can) where would you do it? And why?

The revolution will happen inside of us. The most important revolution will be when everyone realizes that life is not random, that we are loved, pain is a tool and life is a school prepping you for an amazing graduation. I would love to eat painkillers, order KFC, and watch E! all day, but every hour you spend doing that means one more hour away from graduation. That makes me feel too tired.

8. The most interesting secret you've ever heard ...

9. The most challenging travel experience...

I think if you obtain the right combination of marijuana and adderall, ecstasy or dedicate your life to Kundalini yoga, you can begin to travel as a real student of this incarnation and get to your next incarnation much quicker, but it can feel like a very scary trip, like in a dream where your senses are making you feel like a stranger. But we belong everywhere and anywhere. Water anywhere has passed through everywhere infinitely. There is a pattern for all life, which we are a part of. I realized how important it was to work through the fear. The challenge is that we will never not be students while we are here and you will be set back if you don't observe these patterns and step through fear. I woke up really early the other morning and there was a sun shower and it was extra magically gorgeous. I got this emotional pang in my gut. I felt like the world was sad that everyone was inside these days. I got a message.

10. Besides the hype, what differentiates a truly interesting artist from an overhyped artist?

The other day we were listening to the Bobby Beausoleil " The Lucifer Rising Suite". We began an athletically intense conversation about this incarnation. All these questions were regurgitating out of our heads and we just kept eating them back up again, answering them all! All the answers were right there in the patterns of nature. I recently read "Just Kids" by Patti Smith and swallowed that book down to the end HARD and sobbed heart-break sobs when it was finished! I cried the kind of crying that feels like shit ejecting from your stomach. Like when you miss someone that doesn't love you. Then I stayed up all night, put like 5 layers of Revlon foundation on my face, and started drawing S&M gear all over everything and thinking about a sex harness more like it was an X-mas garland. I was completely possessed by the spirit of Robert Mapplethorpe! He made me think about the repossession of the spirit through S&M. That S&M is to create wholeness and peace, even though it appears to be violent and chaotic. It is a very powerful magic for making an equal union between flesh and spirit. I've always thought that Kundalini yoga, drumming, and spanking would be the miracle triad for curing anxiety.

This Friday night at Betty's Antwerp, Belgium's electronic music producer and DJ Sickboy Milkplus will be performing! He also has played with To Live and Shave in L.A. and is touring with Rat Bastard also of T.L.A.S.I.L.A. However, in Nashville, Rat will be performing with the Laundry Room Squelchers because Val and I live here and because Nashville is always in need of a good squelching. Also performing is Miami based Amanda Green's new band (Amanda is also a Squelcher!), Yo Yo Xo, Luciano's (also a LRS member)new band Dyslexic Postcards, which is the band Val and I were haggling at a pre-INC house show in Miami in February to the point of which they were so annoying that Val threw my empty beer can at them and the lead singer flipped-out unplugging everyone's amps and yelling "Who the fuck threw that full beer bottle at me?" (Yes, he lied/exaggerated/actually believed it, because all it was was an empty beer can with a little backwash in it.) "Be a real man and step up!" Well because Val isn't a 'real' man she didn't step up. So I really only got to see two songs because we ruined their show but what we saw was a good old jangly, freaky-deeky indie rock band with an amazing guitar player(Luciano)! Also traveling up from Miami is Sharlyn Evertsz and Asian Aquarium. Check out the videos and songs below! Bombs, Cock ESP, Drugs, Blood, Glitter and Eugenics Council

Last week at a Cock ESP/Eugenics Council show in Chicago some bombs went off...literally. Cock ESP's set consisted of a guy bleeding everywhere having a drug freak-out, some girl rolling around on the floor naked covered in dirt, blood, and glitter who was definitely not Jason Wade or C. Lavender, but they were all there playing, knocking over speakers and having metal kids yell "You suck!" at them. Eugenics Council then came on deciding it was time to use some major props in their set a.k.a. bombs. Check out the video:

Afterwords, everything was covered in bomb dust, there were injured people, the p.a. was broken and Ted from 2 Dead Sluts 1 Good Fuck's gear was destroyed. According to DigUnderRock blog, Rat Bastard will be "performing" the National Anthem at Sun Life Stadium in Miami tonight. Here's the report straight from DigUnderRock:

"A South Florida local music legend, but also known world-wide as noise legend Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra will perform the National Anthem at the Florida Marlins home opener against the New York Mets tonight at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. If you don’t have tickets, you’re out of luck, because the game is completely sold out.

Falestra has performed all over the globe in several bands including Scraping Teeth, Laundry Room Squelchers, To Live and Shave in L.A. He plays a number of different instruments… all in odd tuning and has produced hundreds of local artists in South Florida, including an early version of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. “Hearing Damage: The Rat Opera” debuted in 2009, written by Rob Elba and Brian Franklin. They are a three piece all girl noise-experimental-weird-I-hate-trying-to-describe-a-band's-sound-supersick group based out of Murfreesboro. i don't know .. i never had any money for that sort of thing - i listened to pop radio all the time: mostly from 1983 to 1996ish. My first concert was depech mode. my first cd might have been tori amos's little earthquakes, or jewel for that matter (I joined the BMG music club). I used to tape songs off of the radio, I remember specifically INXS. Also I listened to my brother's tapes of They Might be Giants all the time in junior high. Janet Jackson made a huge impact on me. The first time I ever stayed up all night was when I stayed at my best friend Amy's house and we choreographed our own Rhythm Nation.

What is your favorite song right now?

I have recently rekindled my love of plants and i'm growing a vegetable garden this year. I've only sowed flower gardens in the past, but my parents always had a modest veggie garden. I've been a long-time fan of the black-eyed susan flower, it grew wild in the woods near my house growing up.

Tabuleh's a fav. and lemons in all forms. and these cookies from the grocery-store bakery that were basically just sugar cookies, with a hint of lemon and a light frosting - fucking gooooood.

If you could live anywhere else where would it be? Hawaii. I'm nearly through watching the fourth season of Magnum P.I. and it looks pretty promising. Plus Roseanne Bar lives there.

i like to sing that song You Belong with Me. it's not easy - you need big lungs. The video sucks however and I don't agree with Kayne's interruption of Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV video awards, but I do agree with his opinion about Beyonce. Swift reminds me about the fact that Avril Lavenge's new song was stuck in my head all day yesterday - it's just such an anthem. Don't forget about Miley's Party in the U.S.A. though.

o, man. i don't really wanna be a buddy butt-licker, but there's not really one person. i'm a big fan of the dudes at high density headache, and my partners in private leisure industries. those are the people that i spend the most time with. if we didn't enjoy being around each other, nothing would get done. camille paglia keeps me pretty entertained, but we've never met. i keep her book, Sexual Personae: Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson, by my bed.

How'd it start?

jessica and i had been playing together in a band with michael o'flinn (extreme teen bible), called party cop. the idea there was to create pop music that sounded really far away or buried, like the ghost of pop. that project sort of fizzled, but the premise was still in our heads....i was listening to bush tetras and y pants a lot around that time, which might have had some influence on whatever we started doing. jessica and i were playin with the most amazing century of science.....that's all really tight and orchestrated...so it was sort of like, let's try to do something where we're only limited by a lack of proficiency/training, trade-off on instruments, do something minimal/pop oriented. mary had just put out her first tape as i dress for recess, so it was like, yeah, this is us, this makes sense. lauren was with the band at the beginning....she's the one who named the band, and then she split to do cycles.

For most of my early life, Michael Jackson was my favorite artist. My first tape was Thriller, I believe and when I was in probably second or third grade I got the Dangerous cd. I came home from school one day and my dad had bought a cd player. I didn’t know what it was but he showed it to me and showed me the cds and then gave me Dangerous.

What is your favorite song right now?
I’ve been pretty obsessed with the entire Radiohead album “The Bends”. I love every song on it and think that they complement each other so well. . .I’ve seriously been listening to it for weeks. I also really LOVE “The Bug” by Jerry Dahlman and the Knightcaps – It’s the song in Hairspray that Tracy dances to when she gets out of jail – her answer to “The Roach”. What’s your favorite food?
Pizza! It’s basically my life. I mean, I work at a pizza place, I love pizza, I hope to one day own my own pizza place. . .You can put anything on it (pretty much) and there are so many varieties. . .I’m not sure I could ever get sick of it. I do love food – I want to be a chef. I love eating fancy stuff and having dinner parties, but pizza is the perfect food.

If you could live anywhere else where would it be?
Charleston, S.C. and I plan to be there in the next few years. It’s like a little paradise right in the southeast which I LOVE! We went there on tour in January and we had a whole day off, but it rained and it was just a bummer, but I’ve been on one other occasion and I think it’s just the best! It’s near the ocean and it’s VERY pedestrian and bike friendly. There are so many restaurants and they even have a food and wine festival every year – plus, they have some fine pizzerias and it seems like a good place to be in the culinary business and also, that town needs some shaking up. I kind of want to be the one to do it – and then spends hours on the beach with my dogs.

What do you think about Charlie Sheen?
A few months ago I probably wouldn’t have any opinion at all – aside from I can’t stand to watch his movies/or his hit tv show. However, his new weirdness is intriguing and I enjoy reading about what he’s getting into in the tabloid magazines we have at work.

What do you think about Taylor Swift?
I try not to.

Who’s your favorite person in the whole world?
I kind of hate that question because I’m really lucky to have great friends and family, I have a cool boyfriend who I love to spend time with and we have lots of fun. . .But I guess I’ll say my mom – she does fuckin’ rule!

How long has trophy wife been around?
We started playing together as Trophy Wife in the fall of 2009 (October I’m pretty sure) and we had our first show in in March 2010.

How'd it start?
I knew Mary from a place we both worked and also from our gang – “The Summer Crew” and I had recently started hanging out with Sarah more as we played together in MACOS and sometimes played with Michael O’Flinn in the short-lived Party Cop. Mary and I also played together briefly with Crucial Fag Bait. I met Lauren Plum through Sarah and the four of us were the original Trophy Wife from Murfreesboro, TN. We just all wanted to play music and we had been but hadn’t really done anything that lasted very long (aside from solo stuff -) and in MACOS it’s just a different kind of band. Most people we know in the Boro play in bands and stuff and there are just an overwhelming majority of dudes who think girls shouldn’t be in bands – especially with them – but we were lucky to know some cool, very supportive people, who helped us to come into it and it was and continues to be a blast!

Interview with Jay Schleidt by Eric Andre

Jay Schleidt is a prolific creative force. Constantly engaged in experimentation and manipulation of various mediums including, but not limited to: Sound, video, painting, zines, web design and clothing. He started performing experimental and noise shows in Murfreesboro Tennessee at the very end of the 90's and the beginning of the aughts. He has self released numerous tapes and compilations of his own work as well as other peoples work. Here is a recent interview with the artist that gives a lot of history and information about his creative processes. You are a relatively prolific creative force. You make music, art, and zines. Can you tell
us when you began to come interested in being creative and experimenting with music?

May 9th, 1985 - for my fifth birthday I received a cassette recorder as a gift. Over the years I would play around with all sorts of sounds, ranging from field recordings of my brother and I fighting to completely improvisational one-man radio plays in which I performed as multiple characters and did all the foley art. When a tape would fill, I'd re-record over it with newer material. Listening repeatedly ingrained the sounds in my head much like a pop song. In highschool I was really truly experimenting with life and sound. I'd take apart tapes and tape decks and other electronics to see how they worked and capture recordings of them working in ways unintended by the manufacturers. Tape manipulation was pretty high on my charts as a preferred method of manipulating reality. Something I enjoyed doing was to manipulate the reels while a tape is recording, a sort of drastic stretching of time, logged on magnetic ribbon. These experiments eventually led to more experiments and new ideas on impromptu performance and the appreciation of methods and the sounds generated from such acts.

Are there any specific moments, objects, events or places that have helped shape and define
your aesthetic tastes? Also, would you care to share with us your own take on your specific tastes as it
pertains to your music and art?

Nothing specific, but more of a collected realization that compared to everyone I knew I was alone in my appreciation for complete and utter randomness.

You tend to create very unique,unusual music. At times handsomely organic and at times hopelessly mechanical. Some of it really abrasive and some of it very subtle.
Can you let us know about your general philosophies about the music, the process of making music/being creative and the importance of experimentation in your art?

The ability to improvise and experiment is the most important instrument I possess. It is not limited to note and chord knowledge, specific sound makers and the technical prowess to engage them, or conceptual constrictions which I think most people feel obligated (convinced, brainwashed) to follow during their own creative endeavors. 98% of what I do is completely improvisational, made at once with no pre-thought and caught on tape, then either deemed finished or mixed with something else (randomly or consciously). I tend to listen to my music many times over to give me a good idea of where to cut and what to cut out. My primary goal is to illicit brain growth.

You've had a great deal of musical projects including Yana, snma, branf, and Big SADS.
Can you tell us a little about these projects? Your processes and intentions? Any specific
high points or low points?

My first band was called the Big Bads. It was 1993 and I was twelve years old. I lived in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, which is an "8-Mile City" in the Detroit Metro area. My best and only friend was a fellow named Jason Arnold, who was simply phenomenal at beatboxing. We started the Big Bads because we were heavily influenced by a local rap group who came to our school with a message to stay in school and don't do drugs. I played keyboard beats and Big Bad A simultaneously did all the rapping, beatboxing, mouth guitar sounds, female backup singers, and hype-man shout-outs. We both wrote the lyrics and spent a lot of time practicing our songs. Our "newest the best biggest hit song" was called "Gangs" : You don't need gangs to have a good time, you can have a good time without gangs. Gangs do nothin' but fight - but before you fight let me tell you what's right, so you don't see the terrible sight of of of… GANGS! My very first performance was in a duo I had with Yobleart, called beatfag. It was at the Redrose coffee shop in Murfreesboro, Tennessee c.2000. I hid behind some kind of podium on the side of the stage. People sipping lattes were suddenly interrupted by my piercing shrieks alternated with shaking a large tin can around the microphone like a maraca (it sounds like old school cartoon running). Yobleart taped down a single key on his keyboard and had the note going through some pedals while he played a tape of found sounds and his 1983 drum machine. Then I came out from my hiding spot and rolled around on the floor while making vocal intonations and garbled nonsense. Yobleart lit some firecrackers in a bucketed mic. We played for two minutes.

My girlfriend in the early 2000s was Carrie Sullivan (Fslux, Rigormortis Clitaurus). We seemed to have a tape in the recorder every day. Sometimes the fourtrack would just record the room, only to be flipped and layered with the previous recording multiple times over. We realized that at different times we wanted to make different types of sounds, so we put names on the different "bands" to help us distinguish. Forpermance http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?p=851 was layers of homade samples. Buttercream was harsh power-electronics. Our main duo was branf, which was full of variety in sound and spirit. We performed as braannnf in Nashville, playing with New Faggot Cunts, Hair Police, and other cool acts. Our friend Josh joined us as Rygar for a Redrose show, and as Vee opening for Cock ESP and also for Reynols.

snma was my primary solo project for about a decade. It could be anything I wanted it to be. Screeching blasts of percolated rupture spasms, or dead silence for five minutes, or the recordings of home made instruments literally cut up and taped back together at random and swiped along a tape head, or a synthy dance beat, or a found sound collage, or or or … I never thought about genres or making things to fit a certain mood. My key interest was variety and spontaneity. In 2009 I realized I was making things which as a whole would be heard as somewhat musical in nature. To distinguish it from the more noisy and avant-garde recordings of snma, I called it Yana. (another reason I needed a new name was because people were constantly getting snma wrong; they'd type it SNMA or s.n.m.a. or smna.) With snma I generally shied away from beats and rythms unless they came out in the recording process. Under Yana I felt freer to utilize these aspects in creating some pretty interesting situations. It is still mostly unplanned on-the-spot recordings, but I think I've gotten better at using equipment to my will instead of "what does this do?" Now, it could be argued that since I am more familiar with the way things work it might be considered less experimental, however I am approaching it with the same sense of random aesthetic as always, so I would say my work is just less naive.

In 2006 I was a member of a multi-piece improv unit called Shelf Life. The other key members were Bryan Day, Alex Boardman, and Joseph Jaros, with various combinations of sit-in artists. We performed at all sorts of locations: a public park in the middle of the day for the Dog Days of Summer Fest, smoky bars, a wine and cheese superbowl afterparty, an art gallery performance space where they had us play for over three hours, and other art-spots and basements.

Summer of 2008 Brock Muench and I decided to combine our childhoods with the things we love about music experimentation and mind expansion. He had made these teleporting dinosaur comics called "Super Armored Dinosaurs" (S.A.D.s), and I was in the Big Bads. The result was the Big Sads. Our approach was to hit record and make some sound. We'd extract portions of the recordings and develop them into somewhat structured songs on top of which we put lyrics, usually about dinos and goofiness. As the project evolved, sometimes it would be Brock using a few samples from my recordings to make a new track, or I would take our improvising tapes and smoosh em together, or we'd go back and forth, each changing it a little or a lot before giving it to the other to work on.

Obsc., Count Prudence, Morning Foam.

You mentioned that your music may be less "naive" now because you are more familiar with your tools. I myself often wonder about art that seems naive. Is it genuinely naive or is it just a desired aesthetic? Are the people creating this naive art academic students or true folk artists? It's generally hard to tell what is intentional and what is more.. I guess pure. How do you feel about naive art (music, painting, video, etc.)? Or I guess the comparison of truly pure naivete and intentional naivete. Do you feel intentional naivete is as legitimate or is it more of a deception? And if it is deceptive is that a part of the quality that makes it interesting? Is it more "important" either way?

Some things you can't fake. Intense focus of intentions combined with a shift in the level of experience gradually propels artists out of the membrane of naivete and into a realm populated with comfort and procedure. After time takes a punch

I've played with many musicians who say they wish they could go back and unlearn the knowledge of how to play their instruments because it impeded their improvising skills. On the flipside I've played with many excellent improvisers who knew exactly what they were doing when creating something unique and new. The level of naivete seems to be dependent upon the person performing and the audience listening. At countless live shows I see people bobbing their heads and cheering someone who they perceive to be a master of their equipment, but from my perspective it looks like they are often confused at every new sound, just twiddling knobs and experimenting in front of people, hoping something cool comes out. Is it the appreciation for the concept which drives the

Can you tell us a little bit more about your video art? I know you had a video piece on a touring exhibit last year and you've always done really interesting videos. If I'm not mistaken you used to make VHS video comps and pass them around. Sort of like VHS albums. Can you tell us about that?

I had a videocamera at my disposal in adolescence with which I filmed claymation and stop-motion time-based experiments, murder-mystery theatre involving my family as characters, visual feedback loops, "Homegrown Inbred Goat Fighters," and really just plain wackiness playing with light and electronics. One day years later, I pulled out the old VHS camera to make some videos with my new project snma as an overlay. Something was wrong, and the camera was dying, making these gorgeous impressionistic blossoms of color and grainy white blobs instead of clear images. I hit record and filmed the optical destruction, adding sound to it both from the new recordings and live to tape. The result was a VHS comp I dubbed snma "hurrrrruah.” http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?p=172 The very first snma tracks ever are the first two videos on the tape, "XCGHIH" and "nun," although "XCGHIH" was recorded to the camera at a different speed, resulting in a drastically stretched and enjoyable soundtrack to the convoluted vision on screen. So that camera died and I turned to the VCR and the free cable we were getting at the time. While watching t.v. I would record a few seconds here, a few seconds there. Really random stuff that would be on. When the tape ended I would rewind to a random spot and record a few seconds, and repeat the process as before, but going backwards to the beginning of the tape, inserting snips into the mix nonsensically. At the start of the tape, repeat, but by fast-forwarding to a random spot. When watched as a completed film, crazy coincidences would pop out of the montage, and it would have a definite swing to the cuts and motion. I think I gave away some of these crazy tapes to be used as brainfood for friends. Carrie got me a new 8mm camera and I would apply this same method to my video recording, finding all sorts of interesting combinations and switches exploding using solely home made visuals. In college I studied computer graphics, and was in a 3D graphics program for two years, learning the software and techniques used in making movies like we see nowadays. For the final video project I teamed up with a friend and a girl who offered us the use of the character she was working on for the whole semester if we'd include her in with our project. This made the required length of the video 3 minutes, one for each person involved. I made some scenes to put the figure in and used camera motion and lots of cuts to different shots to give it variety. This worked well for me since a shorter shot takes less rendering time, so I was able to piece together the whole 3 minute video from smaller portions while my classmates stayed up for days waiting for their one minute videos to render, some never even finished. http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?p=28 I was asked to provide some videos for a couple of group exhibits which showed in Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, and the DC area. Although unable to attend, I found a review online which remarked favorably on my video -yet the description given had nothing to do with the events in my film -something about people playing Lynrd Skynrd covers?? -so I assume the reviewer confused my work with someone else's. Lately I've had the honor to have my videos used as projections for friends' performances in Oakland, Detroit, and here in Iowa City. My dream is to someday do live projection mixing, instead of merely pressing play. Upcoming video I'm working on (which might be done by the time this interview is published) is for a track by a hip-hop artist, Asiatic, who has an album coming out on I Had An Accident Records.

I heard you were just recently contacted by some folks in Oxford to sell some of your tapes to them for a gallery exhibit and then inclusion in the permanent collection of the Popular Music Research Unit. That sounds great. Can you tell us a little bit more about this project?

Yes, it is very exciting for me. Oxford Brookes University along with Oxford Contemporary Music is hosting an exhibition / zine fair / live performances / lecture / situation Saturday 26th March – Sunday 24th April. http://ah.brookes.ac.uk/event/editions_of_you_at_the_o3_gallery_2011/ "Editions of You" will focus on self-released handmade editions of music and print media. They showed interest in my work, so I sent some examples. Wish I could attend!

I seem to recall you also used to DJ on MTSU's college radio station. Can you tell us more about that. Any supremely interesting things that may have happened during that period?

Had a few slots on WMTS, mainly we'd go in Friday nights at midnight and get crazy for a few hours. The shows would go something like this: a pretty song by a female artist begins, and within a few minutes we'd start up a record by Merzbow or Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase, add a CD of train sounds, put on another record, and then yell. At times two cd players, two record players, and a tape player would all be playing simultaneously, and getting mixed in and out, creating new interesting compositions. Oh, and we would perform on-air, and have guests call in and perform. You must realize that at this time, c.2000, there was absolutely no sort of appreciation for noise and experimental music in the general population, or at least not like there is now. We were considered weirdos and were shoved to the side as an artsy-fartsy untalented novelty. Don't get me wrong, there were a few supporters and like-minded artists, and over the years the kinds of things we were doing have gradually become more accepted and culturally relevant, but back then we were mainly doing these things for our own enjoyment, and that of the intoxicated people staying up late tuning in. Currently I am the host of a show on http://viva-radio.com/ called the Acid Living Room, airing Tuesday nights at 10, with archived shows available to stream. I only play things that are sent to me by the artist who made it or the label which released it. I am constantly in need of more material, and I encourage anyone who makes or puts out their own soundworks to send me mp3s (each track less than 10 minutes). If I was anybody else it might go unnoticed, however my main job for the past few years has been as a nude artists' model for the local college and university. Honestly, it would probably get me more gigs.

Assuming subjectivity is the cause for bad taste. What do you think about that?

The mind being involved precipitates the taste's state in the first place. Assuming no one is listening to it is inherently good in taste sans any dilution within conscious interaction, a chance of being met good taste.

Assuming objectivity is the cause for good taste. What do you think about that?

When there is no self to not be encapsulated in the sound, the music happens upon a blank stage and cannot be therefore judged by any intellectual or aesthetic concerns other than the sole act of its presence existing.

Can you tell us a little about your past, present and future labels? More specifically
Grel and the newly housed noisearchive.org?

The decision to begin a recordings label happened in 2000. The idea was formed from a series of logical steps. I was meeting a lot of people (like you, Eric) who were interested in art and music that stimulate the mind, which is my primary goal in recording. I wanted to be able to say "check out my new stuff" and then give someone a tape to make their tongues dry out. Experimentation was rife, and many hours were captured on an army of cassettes. The kind of sounds that were being made were so different from regular music that the concept of putting the recordings in the same old type of standard plastic case which surrounds most other media was obtuse. Packaging should reflect the recording it contains: handmade; abstract; difficult to get into; not made for mass consumption; mind expanding; style defying. http://noisearchive.org/grel/ grel was started with my first ever release, a snma tape called "hkhhr" (snma and hkhhr are onomatopoeia, please read as such). The cassette's case was a drawn-on photocopy of a picture i took of what looked like an imploded bird. A different insect was taped next to the hand-written track-listing on each sheet; my copy has a rhinoceros beetle; I remember one of them had a flea. Through grel I put out about 35 tapes, cdrs, and floppy disks by myself and people who contacted me after finding the website. In 2005, I graduated from college in Oklahoma and thought I was embarking on a life-long vision-quest in the Tennessee wilderness, but before it could happen it was over, and so was grel. I lived with my dad in Iowa for a few years and during this time I hinted to myself that I was going to start a new label called De Linqo Donkeyhut, but I could never get up the gumption to make it happen. With a hint from Yobleart, a new label was started to focus on 3.5" floppy-disks and micro-cassettes, called atlatl. http://lation.org/jayschleidt/?p=160 On most floppies was a .html file. Once opened, the music would start playing on a loop, and there's pictures and words to accompany it, provided by the sound artist. At this point I think the coding is outdated and the sound might not play as it used to, but all the files are at the link if you care to check them out. The first release was by Dereck Higgins, and this one had three play buttons under three flashy .gifs, which could be played simultaneously and scrubbed back and forth, like DJing with his sound samples. The second floppy held simply a flash .swf file. A large, red, slashy swoosh rests on a green background, nestling a continuously bulging circle, with an indeterminate shape morphing in a loop in the bottom corner. When hovered over, the red slash turns blue and twitches around like a tar-monster trapped in a net while some sound fades in. It's Jerserf Wheet, a.k.a. Joseph Whitt, AMANDA's documentarian brother. Upon clicking and holding the now blue shape, it turns yellow and bulges while a computer voice starts spewing poetry. The circle in the middle reveals Jerserf's bio, and the morphing corner shape has contact info. Six floppies total came out during this time, c.2006. The next year I moved to Iowa City and tried making friends but failed miserably due to some kind of social awkwardness which puppets my body to it's whims. 2008: Zine A Day. At some point, Andrew Werth, the Lation conveyer, came to me with a few websites he bought for the fun of it, just to see what could happen. One of the domains was noisearchive.org. I installed Wordpress on it, and established an FTP entrance so users could upload their recordings and share with the world. After a while something happened to the page and I had to scrap the whole concept. At the end of 2008 came a new label, Darbolistic Rex, which I placed on http://noisearchive.org/ mainly for something to be there. It began in a similar manner as grel, but the point was to be more collaborative with the packaging and design. Sometimes the sound artist to be released would send all the tapes or cds dubbed and packaged, just needing Darbolistic Rex to act like a distributor. In the midst of all this, during the summer of 2009, I realized I had a lot of recordings from years gone by that would probably not ever get released in any normal sense, so I started Burd Turd Tapes to get them out into the world. http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?p=151 The thing about Burd Turd is that it was tapes of unheard music made by me, but I made up new anonymous names and put the recordings on recycled tapes, no album art whatsoever, and all as single-copies. Then I would place the tape in the Strange Tractor box, which is a newsbox in downtown Iowa City that can be thought of as an anonymous art/music/clothing/etc. trade drop-off site. Three of the Burd Turd Tapes were created by Rob Beckham as MEGAMIX (each in their own cases), and one tape was by Brock Muench as DPRVTY. I continued to release things on Darbolistic Rex, including "A Pairing In Disorder" a 60 artist compilation on dual cassettes, with 5-color screenprinting in a handmade paper case I designed myself. With one sheet of cardstock paper I figured out how to make two 2-tape holders using just a few simple cuts and folds. End of summer 2010 Yobleart became my roommate, and we started a new collaborative label, Ears to Iowa, to put our new recordings on. http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?cat=20 In January of this year for one week I did the Gilden God Tape Label. http://www.lation.org/jayschleidt/?page_id=811 The sound is almost all me, but it is even more accessible and "music-like" than my previous efforts, so I decided to release the tapes in traditional plastic cases on short cassettes (1 minute and 10 minutes). Except for the CATMARE / Mysticosm split, all the album art is made of pieces I recovered from Ally's scrap pile; printing tests, misprints, extras. I might continue with Gilden God, we'll see. Darbolistic Rex is still the main thing for me nowadays. Upcoming releases include a VHS compendium of my videos from 1993 (Big Bads) to 2010 (Fslux "four") featuring a letterpress print of a cat wearing a hat, a Luminous 5CD pentagon shaped accordion box set I've been working on for a while, and a split tape between Problems That Fix Themselves and Microdepression.

If you had $1,000 and you were a werewolf, what do you think you would do?

Are werewolves immortal? If so, I would invest the money and in a few hundred years spend the interest on a cure for my werewolfism. Oh, and chickens, I love chicken.

What are some of the bigger influences on your music?

Cooper Whittlesey is a human being and also a higher astral self who lives in my neighborhood and communicates with me through dreams.

What are some the newer things you've heard that you really liked? Things that were different
or more unique?

The first thing that springs into mind is this stellar compilation from the French label, la station radar. All about variety; there's such a fine assortment of styles and truly cool catchy jams that I feel it must be heard to be believed. On the noisier side I must recommend keeping an ear out for upcoming Point From Rooftops releases, Kevin's been making some really cool things that excite my senses.

This past Friday at SXSW, Narlwhalz and Juiceboxxx collab, Oregeno Pete, Sneakshit Saturdays, Rene Hell, Blastoids (M'Boro) and The Sloppy Syrup Gurls (which was an all star fuckfest collab which I'm sure included Jeremy Harris since he is an allstar fuckfest), Shams, Taterbug and the Fryguys played a showcase called South by South Wendy's at a Wendy's Chain restaurant in Austin. Rodger Stella was there disguised as the Swiss Miss girl. Narlwhalz woke up the next morning in a pile of trash covered in ketchup outside the Wendy's. He was pissed at Juiceboxxx for throwing his mic in some fries but was over it when he found Juiceboxxx left him a baconater in his merch box.

So I was bummed no one had a camera or bothered to send me photos, but then I was reading Nashville Cream today and found this photo and story about head Cream blogger Steve Haruch's South by South Wendys experience:

"After the Flag, Ben made the call to hit a Wendy's for some dietarily questionable grub on the way back to the hotel, and the parking lot was like some kind of zombie-movie scene, with people wandering through listlessly, and a crowd of people hanging off the side of a raised lot, holding onto a railing while they watched some sort of chill-wavy band play in front of a parked school bus. The music was so loud that you couldn't hear anything, so Ben just kept yelling "Hello?! Hello?! Hello?!" in the general direction of the drive-thru speaker until we finally just pulled around to the window. Surreality: high and rising."

John Zorn Hosting a Japan Benefit Show in NYC Featuring Sonic Youth and Yoko Ono

John Zorn has organized a benefit at Miller Theatre at Columbia University on Sunday March 27th, featuring twelve acts from indie rock to jazz to avant-garde. “The tragedy and devastation is really overwhelming,” says John Zorn, who organized and will host the evening. “I’ve always felt a strong personal connection to Japan, and I’m just glad to be able to do my part to help. It should be an amazing night.”

The lineup includes performances by Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, Mike Patton, Sean Lennon,Cibo Matto, Mephista, Marc Ribot, Uri Caine, Aleph Trio and host, John Zorn. The event is already sold out! Funds will be donated to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

Derek Schartung and Lissy Griesmer are Engaged!

Derek Schartung of Taiwan Deth and Malocchio fame has met a classy young lady from Akron, Ohio and the two are engaged. Alissa "Lissy" Griesmer and Derek met at a screening of Michael Carter's Dave Cloud Documentary on Sunday September 12, 2010 at the Springwater in Nashville. She is a Leo and Schartung is a Capricorn. They both like eating cereal and watching cartoons. (And I am pretty sure they are both computer geniuses!) The wedding is set for June 25, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio at College Club of Cleveland. A Nashville party will happen as well, details to be announced at a later date but rumor has it DJ Furcoat and DJ Teen Stream might DJ the Nashville Wedding Party at Betty's Grill! Before Doug Gent of Mothcock left for his tour last week with Outer Space and Drainolith, he got to hang out with Twista at his record store, Underground Vinyl, which used to be Turnip Records. They hung out all day, getting blazed on blunts, talking about which new Britney Spears single they liked better and if Ke$ha was hotter than Lady Gaga. Doug claims the two have been texting regularly since his visit. "We became fast friends, Twista is really just like one of us! He's laid back, likes to toke and left with a Ke$ha CD and a Fire Death record."

Night Burger to Release 3xLP/Laser Disc on Sub Pop Records

...or is it Merge Records? Rumor has it Night Burger is releasing "Conditioning Trench" 3xlp/Laser Disc on Sub Pop. However, according to Noah Anthony's Facebook page it is actually going to be released by Merge instead. Night Burger will play the first annual Merge Records Savage Weekend Festival at Nightlight in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. When asked why he chose Merge over Sub Pop, Anthony commented, "Honestly, I'd rather tour with Arcade Fire, Lambchop(so I can hang out with my dude, Scott Martin), and Caribou than the likes of Postal Service and Wolf Eyes. I heard that chick in Arcade Fire really digs my "Southern Man" tape."

R.J. Remington Convinces Nashville that Loop Retard is Dead

On May 1, 2010, R.J. Remmington of Right Arm Severed fame, was living in Nashville, Tennessee when he had a mental (drug and alcohol induced?) breakdown and checked himself into a hospital. He was dating a woman named Jessamine who was contacting his friends to let them know what was going on. She told Bridget Venutti that he hadn't been right since his best friend had shot himself earlier that week. Venutti immediately became concerned and asked her what friend had shot himself. She told Venutti it was Steven Boardman(Loop Retard, Right Armed Severed, Reale Sadd) from R.J.'s hometown, Madison, Wisconsin. Venutti then came to Betty's Grill and told Crom, Leslie Keffer, Scott Martin, and others what had happened. Everyone was crying and trying to figure out why R.J. who had seen everyone the night before at a show had failed to mention that Steven was dead. Leslie Keffer decided to call Rat Bastard to either inform him or find out more information. Rat hadn't heard about it, but immediately found it fishy. "Call Val, call Mumber Toes; We just saw him and he was fine! Something is up." So Keffer called Valerie Martino in Philadelphia and told her the news. "What?!??? When?! Wait....Ren was just there the other day on tour, I'm going to call him and see what's up." Martino then called Ren Schofield who told her he had just partied with Steven two days ago and he was alive and well. "What the fuck?? I'm gonna call Steven!" So Keffer hangs up with Val and calls Steven and to her relief, he answers. "Oh, My, God, Steven! Did you know that R.J. has everyone in Nashville convinced you shot yourself in your car last week with a shotgun and killed yourself and that your family wasn't even having a funereal or talking about it because they are so upset???" Loop Retard hardly seemed phased or surprised by R.J.'s antics, but was concerned about his hospitalization.
The next day R.J. was released on his own accord. He claims he didn't even remember writing the note, then claims he actually believed Steven was dead when he wrote the note and that is why he went crazy. R.J. then tried to take better care of himself and all seemed well. Steven was alive and R.J. was back and working on his villain performance art pieces. Last we heard R.J. moved back to Madison, Wisconsin to go to prison for filing for custody of his son. R.J. claims he got out of two years and is now working for the government. As Rat would say, "Now that's the real Right Arm Severed set, not what you saw at the show earlier. Those guys are nuts!"

This look-a-like of the day reminded us of how Narwhalz's Brian Blomerth, Kyle's BFF, played a nasty trick on him before INC 2009. Brian decided he was going to pretend to be Leslie Keffer on AOL instant messaging and convince Mabson she wanted to hook up with him at INC that February in Miami. This all started after Kyle infamously kissed Keffer while playing "Listen to Your Heart" by Roxette during his set in Murfreesboro, TN. So throughout January, Brian chatted it up with Mabson as Keffer on AOL using the name "NoiseChick69". According to Blomerth, Mabson believed he was Keffer and anxiously awaited INC. When Mabson finally arrived in Miami, he stayed at Rat Bastard's where Keffer was staying. "He never really tried to get with me," Keffer commented, "however he did ask me to go to Olive Garden on Valentine's Day. I think I was confused, not because of the invitation but because I was like, why wouldn't we go to Puerto Sagua, my favorite Miami restaurant, and get chicken? This seemed to confuse him. Now it all makes sense." Blomerth claims he told Mabson while he was "NoiseChick69" that her favorite restaurant was Olive Garden and that he has to take her there for Valentine's Day in order for NoiseChick69 to put out.

Ex-Nashvillian, Nathan Cearley, has a new Brooklyn based band, Long Distance Poison, and they recently released a cassette on Cryptic Carousel. Their site likens them to all sorts of goodness, "LDP can be located someplace in the analog wilderness amidst the likes of early Tangerine Dream, Kluster, John Carpenter and Terry Riley." -split w/Nautical Almanac/c60/no label
Nathan-Papa and I made this tape in the summertime. We were living in Kent
Ohio... I think it's me playing drums and Papa playing guitar... We played some of
our very first shows with Nautical Almanac and we were so excited about their
band... We used different parts of some recordings from the two Ohio shows we
played with them... We printed the cases/inserts in the Kent State printmaking
studio.... It was just white paper screen printed to look like ruled notebook
paper...Carly Ptak helped us fold the paper cases... we used a typewriter to write the
info onto the covers. Half of them say "Spookwolf 4" which was the original name
of the band (a sequel to 3 movies we all made in high school)... I haven’t listened to
it in a while but last time I did I thought it was pretty awful... and really long..
nautical stuff is fucking insane though. really
Papa- I vaguely remember recording this. We were trying to make good use of
everything in our basement. I should have a copy of this somewhere but I haven’t
listened to it since shortly after it was recorded but I can’t imagine that it would be
very good. It was thrown together pretty quickly between to two shows with
Nautical Almanac and I think it was mostly to have something present them.

2004
-Live New Years Day/c60/King Toot (kt02)
Nathan-An early show from a basement in Kent. Doesn’t sound much like the
majority of our tapes... lots of percussion and vocals. The band was Weber, Talons,
Papa and me.
Papa- This was a personal favorite recording of mine for a while. I’m not sure what
I would think if I heard it now. Lots of low end, manic screaming and tape
distortion. Everyone was shitfaced. Everyone got destroyed by flying drums and
cymbals. We wore armbands back then because no one respected us and we didn’t
give a fuck. Not that much has changed. The B side is cut up material that we did in
our basement in Kent. It is mostly drums and circuit bent electronics. We did a lot of
percussion in our early days up through the first tour.
-Forest of no Relief/CDr/Heresee (hs23)
Nathan-Nautical Almanac asked us to do a CDR for them and we felt so honored to
make it cause we all think they are one of the most fucked up bands ever... So Papa
and I recorded this in 3 days with the help of Talons and Weber. Weber played
trumpet live and on all his early recordings,,,other than that we were just using
vocals and drums... Talons was using some tape loops he made. The different songs
on this recording have some real obvious structures to them but its still totally
warped and a lot of the sources of sound are totally distorted and indecipherable.
Papa- Nathan and I spent a number of very late nights putting this one together. Our
tracks mostly consisted of one person making sound in some form and the other one
manipulating it. The first cover we sent to Heresee was shot down. It was a drawing
I did of a rabbit ghost king complete with crown and scepter on a napkin in
ballpoint pen. It was pretty shitty. We sent them the new drawing of the eagles
screaming “Tusco Terror” which Carly screen printed on watercolor paper. The Cdr
has an early Tusco logo Nathan drew also screened by Carly. The interior sleeve is a
true artifact… a piece of wallpaper torn straight from the walls of Tarantula Hill
before the fire. The full image depicts a Victorian
nature hunt.
-Touch of the Downs/recycled cassettes/Tusco Embassy (14min)/(te02)
Nathan-Made about 10 or so of these. Not unlike the Forest of no Relief recordings.
Except this was the first thing we recorded after we moved to the Diamond Shiners
in Akron. I don't have a copy of this. We gave most of them away to the people in
our new neighborhood.
Papa- I always remembered having an uncomfortable feeling when I listened to it.
This one lowered the bar. Hence the title. It was an exercise in unlearning shame.
-Gold/c60/Exinfut, Tusco Embassy/(te01)
Nathan-Doesn't say "Gold" on it anywhere, but it was printed in gold ink in Kent
State's Printmaking Lab (my least favorite place at the time)... We recorded all the
stuff on this tape in Diamond Shiners over about a year. Hard to believe that we
could get anything done in that place cause all of us were beyond fucked up while
we lived at that place... Its a good tape with a lot of different approaches to recording
and improvising throughout. This recording has Papa, Weber, Talons, Natalie,
Russco and me on it.
Papa- Initially this was conceived as an experimental disco album. I don’t
necessarily think we conveyed that very well or that we came up with a very good
plan for executing this but it was on our mind at least to some degree during the
recording process. I feel like this reached a new level for us at the time and set a
precedent for the recordings to follow. Yes, this undoubtedly was the most “fucked
up” period for the band. Contains the tracks Blood Dreadlock and Bodacious Load.
-Tore Up (live)/3"CDr/King Toot (kt03)
Nathan-Three live gigs in Akron and Kent played simultaneously. sounds pretty
chaotic. performed by Weber, Papa Mike and me,,, recorded by Russco. Released by
some "bootleg" dude who also re-released the early comp of pre Tusco related bands
called "Noxious Burning Urinary Tract Infection" in 1998.
Papa- I believe the Kent performance was a show we had set up with Indian Jewelry
(they were NTX + Electric at the time). We opened that set with deadly swinging
guitar action. One of the first and last sets we used guitars for a long time because
they always became instruments of destruction and we always got beat up pretty
badly. After one of the Akron performances, somebody shouts “ That sucked soooo
bad!” I responded with words and gestures. A section of it can be heard on the end of
the recording. The cover art was tie-dye inspired.

2005
-Tumor Eclipse/CDr/Durable Stimuli, Tusco Embassy (dust16, te05)
Nathan-One of my favorite early ones. First edition (on Steve Dracula's label) was
less than 20 and packaged in 5 1/2" floppy disks. The T/E version was issued in
oversized spray painted foam chunks. There are 42 tracks on the CDr and only about
5 or 6 are more than 3 seconds long... pretty wierd bad trip vibes and odd ball harsh
noise crazy.
Papa- Yeah, I’ve always been proud of this one. I think everyone feel the same
about this recording. Probably the most ridiculous recording session ever. Lots of
throwing gear down stairs. Everyone was going berzerker full panic mode. Aaron
Dilloway later reviewed it as having “total disregard for anything." We have always
been really proud of that statement and amazed at how much it captured the spirit of
that release. Shame was no longer an achievable emotion.
-split w/Heart2heart & Leslie Keffer/CDr/(tour only, no label)
Nathan-Made about 30 or 40 of these for our first tour. our tracks were two tracks of
unedited cruddy basement murk. The Leslie Keffer tracks are exceptional... I think
one of her songs was a tribute to Glen Danzig.
-Great Barrier/c40/Pink Triforce (no catalog number)
Nathan-The first time a person we hadn't met before asked us to do a release. Brian
Seger is a really nice dude. He explained our music as "Punk Rock Musique
Concrete", which i always liked a lot.

Nathan-After I moved to Cleveland we decided to try and practice/record at my new
place. I was kinda weary about pissing off my new roomates so we broke into an
empty rental house a block away. We recorded both sides of the tape in about an
hour in the "cottage house" and mixed, mastered, dubbed and printed the tape the
same night. The first side was used as our side on the Emeralds split record on
Ecstatic Peace two years later.
Papa-This has a very organic feel to it. We utilized a lot acoustic instruments when
we recorded this one. The original cassette release had an amazing psychedelic
Tusco logo that Nathan drew. It was screened in two colors on brown paper. We
tried to replicate this recording at a Cleveland show at the Church. It was part of a
two day festival. We stacked all our amps ten feet high, and it came tumbling down
within thirty seconds, disconnecting everything. Somehow we “performed” for
another ten minutes. Russ and Nathan pushed an amp onto my head and while I was
laying helplessly on stage, they pulled my pants down. For whatever reason we were
the headlining act. It was not received well.

Bad Acid/one sided 7”/Tusco Embassy(te20)
Papa- This was the first vinyl release for Tusco Embassy. It was completed at the
same time as the Ecstatic peace split. This is one of the few recordings that every
single member of Tusco Terror was present. We recorded it similar to Touch of the
Downs and Tumor Eclipse. It was a celebration of absurdity. One side of the 7” was
etched. The packaging was a screened Russco collage with Tusco Logo.
Black/c60/Tusco Embassy/(te15)
Papa-I like this one a lot. It could be considered a follow up to Gold. It was recorded
and mixed in the same kind of process with a year worth of material and had a loose
theme and featured similar packaging. This was our first release that was directly
influenced by the abomination that is metal. Like Gold, I don’t know how much of
that is conveyed to the listener but that is what gives it it's "Tusconess". It is
something Like forty tracks blurred together. Contains Dry Birth and Hell Wax.

Seventy Second Eternal/c20/Chondritic Sound (ch-203)
Papa- These releases are not related in any way except that they were both,
conceptually, experiments with fidelity. The idea was conceived while working on
the Hanson tape. Perhaps, better expressed on Seventy Second Eternal. Each session
was recorded simultaneously on multiple pieces of equipment which varied greatly
in recording quality.

heavy recordings that we made at the Embassy space in Cleveland. A standout

Papa-This was recorded over a weekend in the basement of a large house where
Nathan was dog sitting. It is also one of the only sessions where a track was
dedicated to each performer. There is something distinct about it. I think it has a
subtlety not present on other recordings. Clear Vinyl. Great packaging
design by Stoney.

Papa-This is our only full length vinyl release. It contains material recorded from
another session at the Hudson House. It also has a live performance from a junkyard
just outside of our hometown. We performed in front of heavy duty construction
equipment. Once again, it was directly influenced by the unlimited amount of metal
we were listening to at the time, and of course, our always present themes, tormented
psychedelia and impoverished lifestyles. We completely cleared the place out. A
photo from the show is printed on the backside of the cover. The front depicts “the
Scummer”.

During descent, he drills a hole in the sky as literal as only he could -- ∆G all along the “polywave.” And thus the title of this handsomely packaged, shoddily reproduced grimoire from John Wiese’s Helicopter imprint. As he tells Wiese in the interview that opens this de facto bio, “I never considered anything I did or do to be musical.” To wit, Jupitter-Larsen’s own descriptions of 338 Haters gigs from 1979 to 2008 read like an art class clown’s send up of some stolid exhibition catalog. Thirty years removed though, for GX Jupitter-Larsen and his beloved “totimorphous,” the more things erode...the more they stay the same.

(Open Lot's website) Open Lot has hosted some cool shows over the last year or so like Rangda, Forest Bride, Trophy Wife, Cherry Blossoms, Leslie Keffer & Scott Martin to name a few, but unfortunately rumor has it that tonight's Unwed Sailor, Unicorn Hard-On/Lazer Slut, Ascent of Everest, and Square People Jazz Maturity show, is the venue's last event due to someone not paying the rent. Hopefully this isn't true, but in case it is don't miss this killer show tonight!

Last year, he did 90's alternative rock covers for his set(Nirvana, Alice in Chains, etc). This pissed half the crowd off and the other half got it and rejoiced! We love Dino and so does the Miami New Times.

Drunk Miley Crashes Super Bowl Party at Tarantula Hill

On the evening of February 6, Noisebloid OMG! couple - Bawlmore’s Twig Harper and Carly Ptak - hosted a star-studded Super Bowl XLV fundraiser for salvia divinorum at their West Pratt Street home.
The $500-a-plate dinner was co-sponsored by Dr. Stan Musilfiy, local businessman Tom Boram and Utz heiresses Lexi and Sam Mountain. Attendees included Barry Levinson, Logan Mitchell, Sr., DJ Dog Dick and Panda Bear’s mother, Charlene. Lungfish and former mayor Martin O’Malley’s Irish noise band (feat. Slash) provided the halftime entertainment.
However, just before dawn, Miley Ray Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray, checked his daughter in for heat exhaustion at nearby Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins.
“She was in heat, something fierce,” a spokesperson for Billy Ray’s camp told Noisebloid.
But according to hospital logs, Miley later checked herself out after a hearty breakfast of crab cakes, pit beef and Cap’n Crunch French Toast. (I know, what a fatty, LOL!) Receipts show these items were charged to her room under the name “Stringer Bell.”
According to eyewitnesses, Miley Cyrus arrived at Tarantula Hill a little after 8 pm -- the Steelers still trailing by three. Sauced and belligerent, the 24-year-old starlet hemmed and hawed throughout the rest of the game, even demanding that Jason Urick leave the room because he was, quote, “freakin’ [her] the fuck out.”
Sources say she had plenty to talk about: Eminem’s ice tea adverts, her favorite Nautical Almanac mini CD-R, the pants Steve Albini wore during the Razorblade Suitcase sessions, and, perhaps most topically, that the Steeler's Roethlisberger himself had read for Greg Kinnear’s role in The Last Song.
Be that as it may, most of the party-goers were happy to see her leave -- around 10:30 that night, after polishing off her second six-pack of Natty Boh.
“It was more sad and gross than surreal,” said Prof. Drew Daniel of their most famous, albeit unwelcome, dinner guest. “And while I’m not blaming her per se, we are missing about an eighth of our salvia.”
Ironically enough, Cyrus’ estranged mother, Bobbie Ray Cyrus, was seen leaving the party later that evening with Geof from Charm City Cakes.
“Rafael Toral is playing a late set at Golden West tonight,” she was overheard telling Twig and Carly. “My man Bret got me tickets.”
Noisebloid was able to confirm that Green Bay won the game 31-25.

As mentioned earlier, Night Burger killed it! This is one of my favorite sets. Any set that gets people dancing I'm gonna like. Sorry, I'm biased. Anyway, before Noah Anthony went on as Night Burger (you may recognize him, he's also in Social Junk and Form A Log) Val Martino (Unicorn Hard-On)says to me "Oh my God! Night Burger is next! We can't miss this! Its gonna blow everyone's mind! In fact maybe we should miss it because its going to be the best set! We probably won't even want to play after we see it. Its gonna be so sick!" Val was right about one thing, it was definitely one of the best sets at INC, but she was wrong about the other! I think it inspired everyone who played after Night Burger to bring out the show stoppers, including Unicorn Hard-On! Radio Shock took these videos and posted them on his website www.no-core.net/blog/ and was kind enough to let Noisebloid post them here! (He also did a nice write up about me at INC, not about my set, but about my bouncer skills!) So check it out!

This video is of Lisa Cameron performing under Venison Whirled. Lisa is a long time staple of the Austin noise scene. She has been in countless bands and is one of the most amazing people I have ever met! She plays two snare drums through two amps and it becomes one of the most beautiful, evoking sounds I have ever heard. She also hooks me up with vintage Debbie Gibson memorabilia. I've seen her play many times and this was one of my favorite sets I've seen her play.

Cock ESP! Need we say more? The KINGS of noise! Cock ESP never fails to put on an in your face show leaving you to wonder why you are willing to stand up front and nearly get killed by flying objects thrown by a man in a chicken suit and Ke$ha's twin brother who is covered in so much glitter its even covering his teeth. And they always have some babe up there, and this year it was C. Lavender who squirmed around on the floor like the fish in that Faith No More video.

Blue Shift almost didn't make it this year which would've sucked since her performance was breathtaking. She got robbed in Gainesville, Florida and was somehow able to still get down to Miami. Wielding Rat's Rock-n-Roll violin she took to the stage and blew us away!

Container is Ren Schofield of Nashville. This is his minimal techno style project. People loved it! They got up on that stage and got down! I danced too even though I was super bummed because Ren made a "no talking about Ke$ha, Noisebloid, or Twitter in the van" rule for us ladies just hours earlier.

And last but not least, is Scotty Irving's Christian Noise project, Clang Quartet. The Laundry Room Squelchers took Clang Quartet with us on tour last April and I would just like to point out that Scotty is one of the most fun, ornery, and talented dudes I have ever met, even for a Jesus freak! And I mean that as a term of endearment! Scotty is so passionate and sincere about his music and message that I can't help but be spellbound when I watch him perform.

'Hip Hop in a Honky Tonk' video by Colt Ford features Nashville's only noise/experimental venue, Betty's Bar and Grill, on 49th and Charlotte Pike. You can see the outside of Betty's about the :37 second mark to about :48 seconds in. This guy is a genius. And I'm positive this song was written for Betty's. "I'll give you twenty bucks if you turn that shit off, if you ask me it outta be outlawed...hip hop in a honky tonk." Wow, that's what I hear every native West Nashville regular say when I play 'Mrs. Officer' by Lil' Wayne or 'Over(I'm doing me)' by Drake when I am bar tending at Betty's. Perfection. INC 2011 has come to end. 8 years of INC! We can hardly believe it. This year was more mellow than the others for these reasons: no one was really doing drugs, no reports of any hook ups(although we did see squelcher Lauren making out?? with Radio Shock outside Churchill's Sat. night), and no Loop Retard! Check out his apology video:

Beats/Synths and goth-ed out melodrama was the trend this year. There was also classic noise sets by Cock ESP, Venison Whirled, Lazy Magnet, Newton and Clang Quartet. There was a lot more dancing this year to sets too! Container, Unicorn Hard-on, Leslie Keffer, Sharkiface, and Night Burger had the crowd moving. Night Burger was on the floor and fists were pumping. Unicorn Hard-On's crowd took to the stage and were holding up broken white curtain rods (possibly up there for Cock ESP's upcoming set) and waving them in the air.
